The Class of 2008By: Amal Ali The class of 2008 is the largest graduating class at Higher Ground Academy (HGA). There are 22 graduating seniors at the moment. Graduation will be held at Concordia in June 2008. “School enrollment went up from 2 seniors to 20+ students,” said Bill Wilson, executive director. “The goal for the school is 500 students.” Wilson also said, “I want a small school where everyone is comfortable with each other and everyone is on a first name basis.” “The class of 2008 is a great bunch of kids. They’re creative, and if they try hard, they’ll do well,” Kathryn Pulley, English instructor, said. “I have taught larger classes so this year’s seniors are just right.” Pulley also said the class gets along great; they are all friends. They like to talk to each other so it can be difficult teaching them. “Nobody hates each other,” said Munira Abdullah, senior. “We are one happy family.” Hani Mohamud, senior, said, “We are happy to be the largest graduating class.” Abdullah said, “We are planning surprises for the school.” Advice that seniors have for younger students is: don’t waste your time, believe in yourself, and respect your parents, teachers, and classmates. Hang out with the right people, achieve your goals, have self-esteem, always help each other, don’t hate, share your problems with your friends, and be family. Also, don’t make fun of people.

What is School Like for our Ninth Graders?By: Suad Abdillahi and Asmaa Mohamud Two ninth grade students from Higher Ground Academy were asked what they thought about the ninth grade this year. The students are Mascud Dahir and Hawe Tahiro. Mascud feels that being a freshman is great. He likes to be in high school. Then we asked him the most serious question, “What do you think of the ninth grade being separated?” He just thought it was a great idea, so they can do the work. His goals are to change his behavior and to improve his grades. “It feels cool to be a freshman,” said Hawe Tahiro, another freshman like Mascud. When she was asked what she thought about the ninth grade being split up, she happily stated that she would enjoy the split of her class. Hawe has a couple of goals that she wishes to achieve: she would like to get good grades this year and would also like to get a lot of credits.
