Commitment to Technology
Higher Ground Academy is a K-12 technology based
school that has integrated the use of computers in the
teaching and learning process covering specifically the
subject areas of mathematics, language arts and science.
This has been achieved through the application of an
interactive local area network linked to all classrooms. The
network also manages the curriculum for Internet use
allowing students access from their homes to study and do
class work assignments. And families who cannot afford a
computer are provided with a refurbished computer for use in
their homes.
Student Demographics
Seventy percent of Academy students are new
immigrants primarily from East Africa. Ninety-three percent
of our 450 students are from low-income backgrounds. One of
the prerequisites for graduation from the Academy is that
the student has to be accepted into a post secondary
institution and we have thus far had 100% success. We
believe that immersing students in the use of technology and
maintaining high expectations are the keys to the quiet
educational revolution that is occurring at Higher Ground
Academy.
Practical Experience and
Service Learning
We annually train a cohort of 20 upper division students in
the skills of computer refurbishing and maintenance. These
students are then capable of trouble shooting computer
problems that occur in classrooms and with home based
donated computers. This type of one-stop service helps
assure that our network of computers will remain operational
and students continue to be stakeholders in the process.
Your Donations
We
request donations of computers and related technology
equipment that our trained students will refurbish and
maintain for use in our school and in homes of families who
could not afford to purchase new computers. Through the
generous donations of individuals, businesses and government
agencies our school will continue working to close the
digital divide and effectively use technology to broaden our
students horizons.
